NOTTINGHAM AND NOTTS
FUCHSIA SOCIETY
JULY 2019 NEWSLETTER
MY MONTHLY GARDEN DIARY – JULY
FUCHSIAS
W/c 29 June
(29/6) Super Hot Day! I didn’t really feel like doing much, however, I managed to pot up some fuchsia cuttings before I retired and had a little siesta sitting on the lawn.
- Potted up a hanging pot with 3 Fuchsias, cultivar ‘Vanessa Jackson’. I’m up for a challenge!
- Gave my fuchsias a quarter turn, pinched out, fed & watered
- Trimmed my Fuchsia bonsais.
W/c 6 July
- Potted on 35 young fuchsia plants into 4” half pots. However I have noticed that the leaves on a lot of them have been eaten. Could it be the vine weevil? I checked the root systems and they seemed ok, maybe the leafcutter bee? Anyway, I have treated them with Armillatox and will give them another dose in about 7-10 days time, just as a precaution.
- Continued to water and feed – I’m a bit haphazard with my watering regime unfortunately.
- GENERAL GARDENING
W/c 29 June
- As already mentioned, (29/6) super hot day, potted on my sunflowers before it got too hot and managed to do some watering once it had cooled down.
Potted up 2 x hanging pots, the first with Nasturtium, ‘Moon Gleam’, - it has a white flower which I find very appealing. The
- other is a mixed basket with Ajuga, Stipa and Heucheras. This is a change for me, so I’ll see how it grows.
- I managed to do some general garden maintenance on a day which wasn’t quite so hot! I mowed the lawn, cut back my forsythia.
- I sowed my fifth row of main crop seed potatoes.
W/c 6 July
- My Hebe, ‘Waikiki’ has finally come into flower, it has lovely blue flowers which normally attracts bees and hoverflies, however, not seen much activity so far.
W/c 13 July
- I exhibited at the Long Eaton & District Summer show this weekend (13/14 July), I entered quite a few classes (I put in 10 exhibits in total) I was awarded 1 x 1st; 1 x 2nd & 1 x 3rd. I encouraged my mum to enter this year as she had some gorgeous hydrangeas and we were able to put together 2 x mini vases to enter into this particular class. I too had entered this class – mum got 2nd & 3rd I came nowhere! Thanks to Christine & Lawrence, without their help I would not have had time to put all my exhibits on the show bench, as I was quickly running out of time!
- There is always something to do in the garden! I needed to trim back my shrubs in the front garden which were overhanging the path. I also weeded my urn which allowed me to plant up with a fuchsia and I put a geranium in a stone planter. Just little jobs which needed to be done.
- I rescued an azalea which had been neglected. I weeded round it, taking out a geranium which had just appeared! I have given it plenty of water and hoping for the best!
W/c 20 July
- Potted up 3 x lavender shrubs purchased at Lane’s Garden Centre. I don’t seem to have had much luck with my lavender which I sowed a couple of months ago, so hopefully I may be able to take some cuttings.
