FUCHSIA SOCIETY

AUGUST 2019 NEWSLETTER

MY MONTHLY GARDEN DIARY – AUGUST

FUCHSIAS

W/C 27 July

  • Most of my time is concentrating on my fuchsias, keeping them fed and watered. If I remember, I turn them.

W/c 3 August

  • Referring to the schedule, I am constantly sorting out potential fuchsias for certain classes.  Some are obvious but others, not so!
  • Thursday is when I sort my plants out. I label them and cross reference them against the schedule.  They are put to one side as I won’t have much time to sort them out tomorrow (Friday).
  • Friday is hectic, shopping in the morning and the afternoon is down at Attenborough Village Hall, preparing the room, setting up the tables and putting up the gazebos (even through strong winds are forecast).
  • Saturday – show time! Staging and stewarding in the morning and welcoming the public in the afternoon.
  • Sunday – more public come to see the fantastic fuchsias on show and then it’s all over.  However, it doesn’t just finish there, once plants are lifted; tables are dismantled and transported back to The Depot.  The gazebos are dismantled.  For some it doesn’t finish there, the van has to be returned and other errands completed.

W/c 23 August

  • Derby & District Fuchsia & Gardening club held their 50th Annual Show at Grange Hall, Littleover on the Saturday 23rd. So for me, it was much of the same, choosing which plants I was going to take, checking the schedule carefully.  It was a busy and tiring day, but worth it.  There were many exhibits which caught your eye and most classes were supported.
  • Sunday meant that it was the Beauvale Horticultural Show.  I wasn’t exhibiting as many plants at this show, so it wasn’t as stressful!

GENERAL GARDENING

W/c 17 August

  • A visit to Abbeywood Gardens, Cheshire on the Sunday was thoroughly enjoyable.  Weather was kind to us.  There was a plant fair to tempt us and the prairie garden was stunning.

W/c 23 August

  • Wow! What a hot Bank Holiday weekend!  Monday (the hottest) found me pruning back my apple tree, forsythia and hazel.  I then mowed the lawn and did some deadheading (mainly sweet peas).

Show Weekend

Despite adverse weather conditions again this year, we put on a decent show that we should all feel proud of.

We had 24 exhibitors and 242 entries. 63 were in non-fuchsia classes (see further statistics below).  Congratulations to Carol Yeomans who was awarded 1st prize in the Beginners Class and congratulations also go to John Goucher who won 2nd in Beginners and 1st & 2nd in the Novices class.

A big THANK-YOU to everyone, you helped make the show a success, thanks to the catering team who kept us fed and watered over the 3 days. Thanks also to all the committee members who work very hard behind the scenes to ensure we put on a successful show.  Finally, thanks to all exhibitors, friends and family for all your contributions.  Couldn’t do it without you!
